Things you should know about buying or adopting a pet

While pet sellers can be reputable individuals or breeders who treat their animals well, the ease of selling pets over the Internet also makes it attractive to careless, irresponsible breeders and scammers. To protect yourself, you must be careful and believe only what you see and not what you are told. It is highly recommended to arrange for an inspection of the home where the pets are bred. This allows you to check that the mother and other animals are living in suitable conditions, being well cared for, and are in good health.

Remember that the Kijiji Pets section is NOT intended to facilitate uncontrolled breeding, irresponsible commercial pet trading, trade of dogs or any other animal for the purpose of fighting or stud services. Any ads that are suspected of promoting this kind of activity or reported to us will be removed. Users are responsible for adhering to the applicable conditions in relation to adopting, buying, selling or listing of an ad on Kijiji.

Kijiji encourages, where possible, the adoption of pets and encourages all pet owners to have their animals spayed or neutered as well as microchipped.

When looking for a pet, it is important to meet the breeder or seller and examine the pet before agreeing to anything. Since Kijiji is local to your community, this should be easy to arrange. Never adopt/buy a pet from someone who is unwilling to let you see how and where the animal is living!

Kijiji Pet Welfare Partners:

Description

Meet Meeka. This girl was born in a shelter in Mexico and I brought her back January 2023. She spent 11 months in the shelter before coming to Canada.

She was supposedly the most timid dog at the shelter so over the last couple of years I have been working with her to help her grow.

She is still timid so a quieter household would be best (no kids or older respectful kids). She does warm up quite quickly if you are soft spoken and reassure her she is fine.

Meeka would do best in a home with another confident dog to make her feel safe and to have a dog to play with. She is a medium energy dog but is also good to snooze on the couch in the sun.

She likes to entertain herself with her toys and is very independent. She will not say no if you throw the ball for her though and always brings it back.

I work from home but have left her alone with the other dogs up to 5 hours. In her first months alone she chewed up a pillow when left alone but has grown out of this.

She is not much of a barker when people or dogs pass by although if she sees a cat different story.

Meeka does have a prey drive to gophers, cats, deer, etc and will often chase them. Her recall is not great when her prey drive is in effect so more training and an e-collar is best.

I have had her around bunnies before and she listens to me when I am there. I would never trust her alone with cats, bunnies, other small animals.

She is great with dogs of all sizes and lives with 6lb dogs up to 80lb dogs.

Meeka does have a sensitive stomach and will need to continue on her specific food. It is $112 a bag. Do not try to change her food as I have played around with this and it is not worth the damage. She gets really sick- puking and diarrhea.

Approved home only. Her adoption fee goes back to help more dogs like her.
