Zildjian introduced the 13" K (top) / Z Dyno Beat (bottom) Hi-Hats in 1987, as an extension of the New Beats series (thinner top cymbal and heavier bottom cymbal). Zildjian originally made them in 14" as well, but it's the 13" cymbals that became super popular with sessions drummers like Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, Manu Katche, Carter Beauford, etc. throughout the 1990s. They were among the most recorded hi-hats of the decade.
The top K is thinner and lower pitched, while the bottom Z is thicker and higher pitched. The combination is often described as "the best of both worlds" --- crisp, a bit dry, and with lots of stick definition that records really well and sits nicely in a mix. They also provide a fantastic foot "chick" sound that cuts through.
I bought these hi-hats around 1990. The cymbals are in excellent condition, with no cracks or keyholing (see pics). It was hard to photograph the Z Dyno Beat cymbal because of the light reflections in the room (in the picture it looks a bit dirty, but it's really super clean).
